This particular cemetery was hundreds of years old, with overgrown tombstones, thick cement tombs with marble pillars and wrought iron fences, layers of moss and decay growing from the crumbled steps. It was near an old oak tree where I found the horrible thing that ruined my life, a simple cassette tape with hand written notes on it. Recorded in the year of 2007, the original copy of a madman’s manifesto apparently.. When I returned I threw it in the stereo in anticipation and instantly felt sick to my stomach. Wave after wave of sub-harmonic bass roared through the room, churning my bowels. Disgusting clouds of static fog left me blind and gasping for air. Repulsive sonic high end shrill tortured every animal with a five-mile radius, and still the bass never stopped! All in all, it was the most harrowing 50 minutes of my life and I thank all of the stars in the sky that I made it out of the room with my bones still intact.

An excellent forgotten full-length release from 2007. Catches Alex in his transition from using a more standard pedal set-up, into the heavy as fuck modular synth work that he is doing now. Home made synth boxes and drum machines are fed through dying electronics to form an ultra bass heavy cloud of poisonous gas. This album bridges the gap between his early tapes and the newer album on snip-snip perfectly.

Gray Light / Creosote Harbour

D/A A/D + Crotch - Gray Light / Creosote Harbour (c30), Smoke Filled Casket:
Modular action from Halifax's D/A A/D (Alex Pearson), minimal oscillator pulse from Vancouver's Crotch (Michael Piercey). We're always looking forward to hearing more stuff from the Snip-Snip vaults, and this one from '08 is one of the heavier discs in the SS catalog. This entry in the label's catalog is a hefty three-track collection of crushing analogue style death-synth from a Nova Scotia based artist named Alex Pearson; this is the first stuff that I've come across from the guy, but it's definitely quality, with each of these monstrous tracks spreading out for eons as he sculpts massive waves of speaker-rattling low end, killer squelchy bass tones, impossibly deep bass-pulse and a general atmosphere of suffocating dread that makes this sound like one of John Carpenter's early 80's film scores combined with a demonic old-school industrial vibe. Pearson doesn't get too busy with his samplers and synthesizers, preferring to construct slowly-evolving washes of tectonic rumble and alien electronic flutter that tend to stretch out for more than ten minutes, and it's pretty minimal stuff. At the same time, This Is My Hell is ridiculously heavy with all of the massive bass-drop frequencies and massive stacked powerdrones, and sometimes this disc reminds me of a more dark-ambient version of robo-sludgesters Black Mayonnaise, but obviously without the drum machines and gurgling fungal vocals. Fans of Hive Mind and Envenomist and that kind of immense death-synth-drone approach should check this guy out for sure. - Crucial Blast

City Living Is A Fuck

City Living Is A Fuck (c30), Phage Tapes:

2 fifteen minute drone tracks of field recordings and pure oscillator tones. Never setting in, just slowly plowing through, crushing all in its path. The perfect soundtrack for a Sunday drive in a Sherman tank.

Available from:
Industrial Culture Records (uk)

Review:
Blood Ties
This is a single track of analogue modular synth electronics that stretches for just over 21 minutes. The disc itself has a nice minimal white label, and comes in a mini CD slimline jewelcase. The insert is double sided, also nicely printed, and features a painting of skulls and faces.

The disc begins with a harrowing drone, which is followed with a series of oscillating and warping high pitched sounds. A low end pulse, not far from sounding like some of Wolf Eye's work, keeps these drones together and almost adds a beat to the track. More sounds and decaying drones instantly begin to join the mix, and are constantly being warped around. There are plenty of frequencies from the low bass to the seering high pitches, which is excellent. The track is also kept together with an almost dark ambient basis. Already keeping to the basic concept at hand, this is a monstrous collection of analogue drones that do indeed "run strong" together. The drones slowly begin to shift higher and lower, and begin to phase, creating a atmospheric haze of oscillated sounds. Throughout the track, the pulse begins to become more prominant and faster. However, the mix itself does not allow any one drone or frequency to dominate another, and is well kept together. Sometimes though, this disc does feel like a collection of drones and sounds swamped over each other, and at other times it feels quite composed as different textures weave together and change at the same time. The amount of different noise happening in sucession is pleasing, and takes a different approach to most analogue-synth-only projects/purists, who just simply record and leave it at that.

Nearer the end of the mix, more loops are added, and makes that pulse even more rhythmic than before. Perhaps this is too late, as it would have worked better building up for several minutes rather than just lumped on at the end. Throughout the 21 minutes, I feel that it could have evolved a bit more, and definately could have had those loops earlier. I suppose as this is drone then the point is to simply create a series of textures that work well together, and that's exactly what happens. If you like a darker side of synth-only orientated music, then this is perfect. The vast collection of simultaneous sounds make this release not bad at all. Promoted as "the perfect soundtrack for a Sunday drive in a Sherman tank", I can certainly agree, especially if this consists of bloodening your treadmills with the fallen bodies of your enemies.<span style="font-style: normal;
